Description

Water and education are closely linked, particulary in developing countries. Every day, millions of children are deprived of their right to learn because they have no easy access to water and sanitation. In underprivileged countries where water is a rare resource, children must walk long hours to fetch water at the source or from a well, and to lead cattle to a stream. Girls are most often the ones who are left with these tasks, in the same way as they are the ones who must care for their loved ones suffering from waterborne diseases. Difficult access to water therefore explains in part why 104 million children, among which 65 million girls, are currently absent from school. Education is also effected by water contamination, since the resulting diseases force a great number of children to stay home. As a consequence, 443 million school days are lost each year because of infections linked to contaminated water. As for the children who continue to go to school in spite of it all, their learning abilities are often weakened by these diseases that affect their memory and concentration. Education is a driving force for a country’s development. To break the vicious circle of poverty, access to water must become a reality for all. www.onedrop.org

We call Earth the “blue planet” because of the tremendous quantity of water that covers it, giving it the distinctive bluish tint that we see from space. In fact, water—oceans, lakes, rivers and glaciers—covers approximately 70% of the Earth’s surface. Of this seemingly astronomical quantity, only 25% is in the form of freshwater, accessible to human beings for drinking. Almost all of Earth’s water is either salty or imprisoned in ice caps or groundwater bodies that are hard to access because of their depth. This is why we say that water is a scarce resource.

If we often consider water resources in terms of their vital, domestic, industrial and agricultural uses, we sometimes forget just how much these resources are an integral part of the physical environment that surrounds them. The Earth’s landscape is composed of a vast number of elements that, together, make up the thousand and one faces of our planet, rendered unique thanks to water. The immensity of the ocean, the powerful nature of cataracts and the eternal snows that embellish mountain tops form water’s many shapes, each adding to the beauty of Earth and making it an environment conducive to life.

Water is as essential to our survival as the air we breathe. And much like the right to life itself, access to water is a fundamental human right.

The right to water guarantees that each and all individuals have affordable access to safe water in sufficient quantities to meet their basic needs such as drinking and eating, sanitation, food preparation and personal hygiene. Water ensures the survival, health and dignity of human beings, and access to this resource is essential to the fulfillment of several other fundamental rights.

Then how can hundreds of millions of people still be without access to safe drinking water?

While the right to water is protected by several international treaties, it is still but a dream for many people, especially in developing countries. If the responsibility for making sure everyone has access to water falls on governments, we, as individuals and collectively, have the power to affect change. By staying informed and adding our voices to the thousands of other voices who are calling for universal access to water, we can fulfill the water for all, all for water dream.
